While some college students are old enough to drink, many of them are under the legal age. It is fairly common for college freshmen and sophomores to be arrested for alcohol-related charges. This could just be a minor in possession (MIP) charge, but it could also be something more serious, like driving under the influence.
Parents often wonder why college students would take a risk like this. They clearly know that it is still illegal for them to drink, even though they now live on their own. It puts their future – and potentially their education – in jeopardy. So why do they do it?
Peer pressure
One of the top reasons college students drink alcohol is peer pressure, because they may be in an environment where other people are also drinking. A college freshman may want to appear cool to their friends or fit in at a party.
Relieving stress
College can also be a stressful time, whether this is this is the stress of making new friends, adjusting to a new living environment or more challenging classes and exams than they’re used to. Some use alcohol as a coping mechanism.
Seeking their own identity
Finally, college students are often learning about themselves and trying to create their own identity. They may be curious about alcohol, even if they have never consumed it before. They may also intentionally do things that push back against authority.
Legal defense options
Are you a parent of a child who is facing criminal charges in college? If so, it is critical that you know exactly what legal defense options they have.
